How often should I have my carpets and upholstery cleaned?

We often get this question, and the response is that everyone has different needs when it comes to cleaning services. Despite the fact that it doesn’t seem particularly helpful, that makes logic.

Cleaning a carpet that doesn’t need it is pointless because every family has different cleaning needs due to their varied lifestyles with foot traffic and high traffic areas in their floor covering.

Generally speaking, you should have a professional carpet cleaner clean your carpets once a year with hot water extraction to remove the dust and grime from the carpet fibres.

This is due to two factors. First of all, Australian Standard 3733 says that carpets in residential buildings should be checked by a professional at least once a year. Second, most high-quality carpet makers recommend having a professional clean the carpet at least once a year to keep the warranty valid.

This is probably in line with Australian Standards for carpet manufacturers. Regular carpet cleaning extends the life of your carpets. But there are exceptions to the 12 month norm, some of which are listed below.

Children:

Your carpet will suffer damage from small feet roaming around your rooms if you have kids. It probably has stains and spills, often in unexpected places. How could they introduce dirt inside? As your children rush in and out, followed by the many school buddies they bring home, there will likely be a lot of foot activity there as well.

This kind of usage will result in more frequent cleaning needs for carpet. Your carpets could need cleaning every nine months, but you’ll have to judge this for yourself. Keep an eye out for colour changes and sticky stains in the heavy traffic areas. They serve as your cue to contact the carpet cleaning.

Pets:

If you have animals that spend most of their time inside with you, your carpets may need cleaning every six to nine months. If your pet is getting old and starting to have accidents, you should have a professional clean it every six months. Your carpets should be good for up to nine months if there are no problems with pet pee.

Pet hair, filth, dander, and everything else they’ve rolled in will eventually make their way into the pile and settle there, however. Occasionally, you may not see a filthy spot but detect the distinctive pet odour or, if you sit on the carpet, have itchy skin. All the built-up filth hidden in the carpet pile will be eliminated by a routine professional steam clean.

Couples or singles:

If you don’t have to share your house with kids or pets and you live alone, your carpets won’t need to be cleaned as often. You should schedule a professional carpet cleaning every two years, on average.

Naturally, there will be exceptions, particularly if you like hosting parties and entertaining visitors. Food and beverage spills may be hard on carpets, so you might need to schedule a yearly cleaning to preserve the integrity of your carpet.

End-of-lease cleanings:

In certain cases, the choice is made for you. No tenancy rules require that you have your carpets professionally cleaned at the conclusion of your lease, but some landlords and agents may include a particular language requiring it in your lease.

Even though it’s unclear from the law whether or not this is enforceable, it’s sometimes simpler to just have them cleaned so you can get your bond money back.

So, how often should your carpets be steam cleaned? Your carpets will stay clean and attractive for many years to come if you consider how you are utilising your space and go by our recommendations.
