Are carpeted floors unhygienic even if cleaned regularly?

Carpet is an expensive home investment. The carpet is durable and comfortable, but it requires maintenance to stay hygienic and look good for years. On the other hand, dirty carpets may also attract dust mites and other volatile organic compounds.

Carpets get dirty and require regular cleaning. Spills, snags, stains, and everyday wear can leave carpets dingy and worn. If you don’t maintain and clean them, allergens and other health issues can build up and become a health hazard.

You can keep your carpets clean, fresh, and looking new with the right strategy and schedule cleaning it on regular basis.

dirty by soil or bacteria?

If you’ve ever pulled up old carpet and padding, you know that no matter how often you vacuum or shampoo, there will be soil underneath. Walking barefoot over carpet/padding causes friction and wear, which trickles down to the floor.

“Soil” under the carpet pad can be outside dirt or the carpet and padding. One could say that buried dirt is not airborne, but perhaps the same physical forces that break up carpet send it into the air.

Except for expensive carpets, padding and carpet are mostly synthetic and chemical. Even if you can’t smell them, materials last for years. Another poster said hospitals have carpets.

fixed several plumbing leaks.

Even though remediation experts arrived with dryers and blowers, wet carpets developed mould. (In dry climates, this may not be true.)

But isn’t that true of most flooring?

Wet laminate is hard to dry completely. Like hardwood. Tile? Even grout absorbs water and dirt. I’ve seen debris under sheet vinyl, but not as much as carpet padding.

Friction also causes wear. Unstained, sealed concrete has microscopic pits that trap dirt, dulling the floor over time. Who vacuums/washes every inch of the floor? Dirt troves can be found beneath appliances. Do floors make us sick? Our immune systems are smart. If we keep ours intact, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Regularly vacuum

Regular vacuuming keeps carpets clean and fresh. In high-traffic areas, vacuum carpets twice a week. When dirt and other particulates are tracked into your home, they are abrasive and can erode the carpet backing.

Vacuuming 1-2 times per week can remove up to 75% of dirt and debris from your carpet and prevent wear and tear.

Immediately treat stains

Carpet spills are best avoided, but accidents happen. Spills, accidents, and stains are inevitable with kids or pets. Treating them immediately can save you a lot of frustration.

Two spill commandments:

Hurry

Never rub; always dab.

The longer you wait, the more the stain will set and be harder to remove. Blot gently with a clean cloth or paper towel. This puts pressure on the liquid, allowing it to absorb rather than set. Avoid spreading by blotting from the outside in.

Annual professional carpet cleaning

Even with weekly vacuuming, carpets get dirty. Too-deep dust, dirt, pet dander, and pollen will build up and make your carpet dirty and unhygienic.

Professional carpet cleaning services are deeper than vacuuming, even with steam. Follow the instructions exactly if you try a steam deep-clean. If you steam clean your own carpets incorrectly, you can attract more dirt and promote mould and mildew growth.

The carpet cleaners offer professional-grade carpet cleaning that removes allergens, dust, and pollen.

The frequency of carpet cleaning depends on several factors.

Foot traffic

Multiple pets or kids?

We recommend deep cleaning every six months to keep your carpet in tip-top condition, but many homes can get by with an annual cleaning.

Staying Clean Between Cleanings

Besides deep cleaning and vacuuming, there are other ways to keep your carpet clean.

Every entrance needs a doormat.

This allows people to wipe their feet before entering your home, reducing dirt and debris on your carpet.

Remove Shoes

Take off your shoes when you enter to avoid tracking in dirt and allergens. This is a common custom in many cultures. Consider where your shoes have been. That’s not floor-worthy!

Buy a high-quality vacuum

Buy the nicest vacuum you can afford. There are options for people with multiple pets, steam for juice spills, and vacuums with allergen filters.
