Common Storage Unit Mistakes to Avoid

Estimate the items you plan to store and leave a safe route to anything you may need later. Ask the facility about dimensions, permitted items, access hours, fees, insurance options, climate controls and security arrangements. Review the written agreement; a website description is not a substitute for your specific terms.

Clean and dry ordinary household items according to their material care instructions before packing. Let damp goods dry fully and do not place food, hazardous materials or prohibited items in storage. Use suitable containers and avoid overfilling boxes or blocking vents and access paths where the facility requires clearance.

Place frequently needed items near the front, label boxes clearly and leave a stable aisle where the unit layout permits. Keep heavy boxes low, stack within container and facility limits, and avoid leaning unstable objects against walls or doors.

A storage facility's access controls, pest practices, insurance and environmental conditions vary. Ask what protections apply and what remains your responsibility. Keep an inventory and important documents outside the unit; never store items that the agreement or local rules prohibit.

Check the facility's inspection and access requirements and visit as allowed under the agreement. If you notice damp, pests, damage or a security concern, document it and contact the facility promptly. Cleaning an item before storage cannot prevent every environmental or facility issue.
