Remove and identify each mat
Take mats out of the vehicle before vacuuming, washing or drying. Check the vehicle and mat maker's instructions, especially for custom-retention clips or mats that must not be interchanged.
Vacuum loose dirt from carpet mats
Shake out loose debris outdoors where appropriate, then vacuum the dry mat. Spot-test any permitted cleaner in an inconspicuous area and avoid soaking the backing or scrubbing delicate fibres aggressively.
Clean rubber or plastic mats gently
Use only a product compatible with the mat material and follow its label. Rinse only if permitted and prevent cleaner residue from leaving the surface slippery. Do not use oily dressings on the driver mat.
Dry fully before reinstalling
Air-dry the mats completely away from heat that could warp or damage them. Refit only in the correct position, using the original retention system. Check that no mat can slide or obstruct accelerator, brake or clutch movement.
