Confirm the return method before moving out
Ask the agent or rental provider where, when and to whom keys, fobs, remotes and access cards should be returned. Check whether the office has opening hours or whether a documented alternative is approved. Do not leave keys in an unsecured location without written agreement.
Record what was handed over
Make a list of each key or access device and obtain a receipt, email or other confirmation. If returning items in person, note the date and recipient. Keep a copy with the agreement, condition report and final correspondence.
Report missing or damaged access devices promptly
Notify the property contact in writing and explain what is missing or not working. Ask for any proposed replacement cost and its supporting basis. Lock and access requirements differ; do not arrange changes without checking authority and current local rules.
Check the official tenancy process
Use the authority for the property location: NSW renters can consult NSW Government renting guidance, Victorians Consumer Affairs Victoria, and Queensland renters the RTA. Seek qualified advice if a key charge or bond claim is disputed.
Keep cleaning access separate
A cleaner should receive keys only under an authorised, documented access arrangement for the agreed appointment. A cleaning booking does not transfer possession or confirm that all tenancy handover requirements are complete.
