Check the fitting condition first
Do not touch a cracked plate, exposed wiring, a warm fitting, sparks, buzzing or other electrical fault. Keep people away and contact the property manager or a licensed electrician. Do not remove a cover or work inside a switch or outlet.
Use a dry or carefully controlled cloth
For ordinary dust, use a clean dry cloth. If the fitting and product instructions permit damp cleaning, apply minimal moisture to the cloth—not the switch or wall—and keep it away from openings, sockets, controls and cords.
Choose a compatible surface product
Check the plate material and product label. Avoid spraying liquid directly onto electrical fittings, using abrasives that can remove markings or finish, or mixing cleaning products. A cleaning cloth should be clean and suitable for the surface.
Include touchpoints in a room routine
Wipe accessible handles and plates when ordinary soil is visible, using separate cloths for bathrooms, kitchens and general living spaces. Cleaning a switch does not disinfect its interior or repair an electrical component.
