Start with construction and condition
Identify wool, synthetic, plant fibre, silk-like or blended material, and check the backing, fringe, dye and pile. Photograph existing fading, wear, loose edges and stains. An unknown or valuable rug should not be soaked or scrubbed until its care requirements are confirmed.
Remove loose soil gently
Vacuum with an attachment suited to the pile and secure fringes or delicate details. Turn or lift the rug only when safe, and avoid aggressive beater bars, brushing and dragging. Fitted carpet needs the same attention to pile, backing and joins before wet cleaning.

Treat spots with restraint
Blot fresh spills, remove solids without scraping and test a compatible product in a hidden area. Use minimal moisture and do not use bleach, vinegar, powders or solvents by guesswork. Rinse or remove residue only as the material instructions permit, then dry without trapping moisture underneath.
Use specialist care when needed
Large rugs, unstable dyes, fringes, antique construction, odour in backing, water damage and mould-like growth need a rug or remediation specialist. Dirt2Tidy can quote suitable carpet cleaning when the material and scope are clear, but results and stain removal cannot be guaranteed.
