Check the product label and toilet instructions
Read the exact container label for the product’s permitted use, contact instructions, ventilation, protective measures, rinsing and storage. Check the toilet maker’s care guidance for the bowl, seat, seals and any in-tank components. Do not assume that a product suitable for one toilet or purpose is suitable for another.
Do not invent a contact time
Leave a product in place only for the time expressly allowed by its current label and consistent with the fixture maker’s instructions. If the label does not say overnight use is permitted, do not leave it overnight. More time is not a substitute for labelled directions and may not improve the result.
Never combine bleach with another cleaner
Do not add toilet acid, ammonia, drain cleaner or another chemical to bleach, and do not pour a second product into a bowl that may still contain cleaner. NSW Poisons Information Centre advises users not to mix cleaning products; see its cleaning-product safety guidance.
Follow the label’s incident directions if a product is spilled or someone is exposed.
Stop if the fixture reacts or is damaged
If the bowl, fittings or seal change colour, become damaged, leak or retain an unknown product, follow the label’s instructions and contact the fixture maker or a qualified plumber. Do not try to neutralise a chemical with another product.
Keep routine toilet cleaning within scope
A cleaning service should use only products and methods confirmed for the fixture and agreed scope. Cleaning does not repair a leak, certify plumbing or guarantee removal of every deposit or stain.
