How to Use a Bleach Product in an Apartment Safely

Bleach products have different concentrations, ingredients and labelled uses. There is no universal dilution for cleaning an apartment. Check the exact product and surface directions rather than adapting a recipe from another bottle or online post.

Check the exact product label and apartment surface

Confirm that the product is labelled for the intended task and material, then follow its stated amount, application, contact and rinse directions. Check fixture or surface maker instructions as well, especially for finishes, fabrics, metals and food-contact areas.

Do not mix bleach with other cleaners

Use one product at a time. Never combine bleach with toilet or bathroom cleaners, acids, ammonia or another household chemical. NSW Poisons Information Centre advises using cleaning products in a ventilated area and not mixing chemicals; see its cleaning-product safety guidance.

Follow ventilation, protection and storage directions

Use ventilation and any protective equipment required on the label. Keep children and pets away as directed, do not transfer bleach to an unlabelled container and store it as the product maker instructs. Stop if the product, surface or previous cleaner is unknown.

Choose a different product when bleach is not specified

Bleach is not a universal stain remover or a guarantee of disinfection. If the label does not include the surface/task, choose a cleaner labelled for it or ask the manufacturer. Do not use extra product or a stronger mixture to force a result.
