Identify the upholstery and cause
Check product documentation, care labels and upholstery details to distinguish finished leather from suede, nubuck, coated or imitation materials. Look for uneven fading, surface cracking, sticky coating or colour transfer. Cleaning cannot reverse ageing, sun bleaching, dye change or finish damage.
Start with gentle, compatible care
Remove loose dust with a soft dry cloth. Use only a cleaner or conditioner approved for the exact upholstery and apply it as directed after a discreet compatibility test where appropriate. Avoid household bleach, alcohol, vinegar, abrasive pads, excessive water and unapproved oils.

Avoid spreading colour or damaging the finish
Use a clean light-coloured cloth and stop if colour transfers, the surface becomes tacky or the finish changes. Keep the sofa away from direct heat while drying and follow the manufacturer's maintenance instructions. Do not assume a product labelled for leather suits every coating.
Seek specialist advice for persistent discolouration
A leather or upholstery specialist can assess whether the issue is soil, finish wear or permanent colour change and explain available options and risks. Request the method and limits in writing. No cleaning service can promise to restore original whiteness or remove every yellow mark.
