Confirm the appliance and allow it to cool
Wood, gas and other heating appliances can have different glass and cleaning requirements. Switch the appliance off as directed and wait until the door and glass are completely cool. Do not clean while operating or open a sealed unit contrary to its manual.
Use only an approved cleaning method
Read the maker's directions for the glass type, cleaner, cloth and any required rinsing. Some fireplace glass has coatings that can be damaged by household sprays, solvents, metal tools or abrasive powders. Do not assume a cleaner designed for oven glass is suitable.
Avoid ash and improvised mixtures
Fireplace ash may contain abrasive particles and can scratch glass. Do not mix ash, vinegar, ammonia, bleach or commercial products. Keep moisture away from seals, vents and metal components unless the appliance maker directs otherwise.
Stop if the glass or seal is damaged
Cracks, chips, loose seals, persistent residue or a gas-appliance fault require manufacturer or qualified service advice. Cleaning cannot repair damaged glass, restore a coating or certify the fireplace safe to operate.
