Measure the work and access
Describe wall dimensions, ceiling height, number of colours, trims, doors, windows, furniture and access constraints. A small accent wall differs from multiple rooms, stairwells or exterior work. Confirm who moves furniture and protects floors and nearby finishes.
Assess preparation and surface condition
Peeling paint, cracks, stains, texture, moisture and previous coatings can affect preparation. Painting does not fix leaks, structural movement, mould or hazardous coatings. Ask whether patching, sanding, priming and repairs are included and who is responsible for diagnosing underlying issues.
Compare paint systems and quote terms
Confirm brand or product specification, finish, number of coats, labour, materials, cleanup, timing and exclusions. Ask how extra preparation or colour changes are priced. Compare quotes using the same measured area and scope, and clarify warranties in writing.
Keep painting separate from cleaning
Cleaning can prepare or maintain some surfaces only when included and compatible, but it is not a painting service. Protect freshly painted or curing surfaces and follow the paint maker's guidance before wiping or applying other products.
