How do I lubricate a sticky knob on an interior door?

carpet cleaning

Lubricating your old door hardware not only gets rid of the irritating squeaking, screaming, and clicking noises, but it also increases the equipment’s life.

To clean and lubricate all of the moving components of severely neglected door hardware, it may be necessary to remove or disassemble it. The major components of a door that require lubricating are a sticky door, door knobs, deadbolts, latch bolts,s, and hinges. Professional locksmiths prefer graphite powder as a lubricant for keeping a door lock or deadbolt in good working order.

Deadbolts and Doorknobs

  • Using a screwdriver, remove the lock from the door. The majority of doorknobs and deadbolts are secured to the door with two mounting screws.
  • Using a screwdriver, remove the striker assembly mounting screws.
  • Remove the striker assembly from the door by sliding it out.
  • Blowing off built-up dirt and dust with compressed air loosens and removes it.
  • Use automotive parts cleaner to clean the keyholes and interior mechanisms of the doorknob or lock.
  • Use a large amount of graphite power on the hardware’s striker and lock mechanisms, as well as any keyholes.
  • Using the screwdriver, reinstall the door hardware. To work the graphite powder into the mechanisms, turn the doorknob, lock, and deadbolt numerous times.

Door Hinges

Align a pin punch with the door hinge pins and hit softly with a hammer to loosen them as it attracts dirt. You don’t have to completely remove the pin; just enough to allow for lubrication.

  • Saturate the pin with a few drops of penetrating oil.
  • Applying too much oil will cause it to flow and leak from the hinge. Only a few drops are required.
  • Using the hammer, tap the hinge pin back into place until it is firmly placed in the hinge.
  • Continue with the remaining hinges in the same manner.

For years, many individuals have put up with the annoyance of a stuck door lock. Most locks may be fixed in a couple of minutes by cleaning and oiling them. It may be necessary to disassemble, clean, and then reassemble a few difficult locks.

First, use a penetrating lubricant like WD-40 to clean the keyhole. Spray the lubricant first into the keyhole and then on the key. To distribute the lubricant, slide the key in and out of the lock numerous times.

If this basic cleaning doesn’t work, remove the source of aggravation: Disassemble, clean, and reassemble the complete door lock in about 10 minutes.
