How to Address a Damp Smell in a Home

Check for recent spills, wet laundry, condensation, plumbing leaks, roof or window ingress and water around appliances. Note whether the smell is localized or returns after cleaning. Do not open walls, access roofs or disturb mould-like material to investigate.

If the source is a small clean-water spill, remove nearby items and dry materials according to their care instructions. Ventilate where safe and practical. Do not use heat or electrical equipment in a wet area unless it is designed and safe for that use.

Air freshener does not remove moisture. Do not scrub extensive mould-like growth, mix cleaning products or apply bleach or another chemical without confirming suitability. A cleaner cannot diagnose a leak, ventilation fault or hidden moisture.

Repeated wet patches, a persistent smell, a large affected area or suspected contaminated water may need assessment by the property manager, building professional or qualified remediation provider. Document what you observe and keep people away from unsafe or contaminated areas.
