Make the lamp safe first
Switch the lamp off, unplug it where the design permits and let the bulb and fittings cool. Keep liquid away from the socket, wiring and switch. Do not dismantle electrical components or clean a damaged fitting; ask a qualified electrician or replace the item through the appropriate process.
Dust fabric, paper and delicate shades
Use a clean, soft brush or a suitable low-suction vacuum attachment when the manufacturer permits it. Work from the top down and support fragile fabric or paper. Do not wet paper, silk, pleated fabric or glued seams unless the care instructions specifically allow it. Stop if the colour, shape or backing changes.
Clean glass, plastic and metal carefully
Glass may tolerate a compatible damp cloth, while plastic, painted metal, brass and coated finishes can scratch, cloud or tarnish. Put product on the cloth rather than spraying towards the fitting, test an inconspicuous area and dry the surface. Avoid abrasive pads, ammonia or acids unless the manufacturer confirms compatibility.
Prevent dust without damaging the shade
