Check the carpet before adding moisture
Read the carpet care instructions and identify the fibre if possible. Some materials, dyes or backings may be sensitive to water. If the surface is valuable, delicate or unknown, seek appropriate advice before spot treatment.
Blot rather than soak
For a fresh spill, remove solids gently and blot with a clean absorbent cloth. If the maker permits a damp cloth, use minimal moisture and avoid rubbing or saturating the pile and backing.
Know what water cannot do
Water does not dissolve every oily, sticky or set-in soil and cannot reverse dye damage. Repeated wetting may spread a stain or leave moisture below the visible surface.
Use products only when compatible
If water alone is not suitable, do not improvise a mixture. Use a labelled product only when it is approved for the carpet and follow its instructions, or ask a qualified carpet cleaner to assess the stain.
