Identify the surface before buying a cleaner
Check whether the pane is coated, tinted, filmed, treated or part of a specialist assembly. Identify frame, seal and screen materials too. Follow the window maker’s care instructions and avoid a product that excludes any surface in the cleaning area.

Compare product labels, not unverified rankings
Read the label for approved surfaces, dilution, application, ventilation, protective equipment and rinsing. Terms such as streak-free, eco-friendly or ammonia-free do not prove that a cleaner is safe or compatible for every pane. Do not mix products or use a household recipe where the glass maker has not approved it.
Choose tools suited to the pane and access
A clean lint-free cloth or suitable squeegee can work for accessible glazing when the maker permits it. Check rubber and cloth surfaces for grit before use, and do not use a blade, abrasive pad or solvent unless the exact glass instructions allow it. Leave elevated, damaged or hard-to-reach glazing to an appropriately equipped provider.
Store and use products as directed
Keep products in original, labelled containers, follow storage and disposal directions and keep them away from children, pets and food. Use only the amount and contact time on the label. Persistent mineral deposits, scratches or coating damage may need professional or manufacturer assessment rather than a stronger chemical.
