Check the water source and immediate safety
If the water source is unknown, dirty, from a flood/sewer, near electrical equipment or still entering the room, keep clear of hazards and contact the appropriate property, utility or restoration professional. Do not touch wet electrical items. A spill guide is not a substitute for emergency or building-safety advice.
For a small clean-water spill, absorb without rubbing
If it is a small spill from a clean cup or similar source and the area is safe to approach, use an absorbent clean cloth to blot the surface gently. Avoid scrubbing or pouring more water onto the carpet. Follow the carpet maker’s instructions for the material and any permitted drying method.
Check whether moisture reached the backing
If the carpet remains wet, the area is large, water reached the edge/underlay or dampness returns, surface blotting may not address the moisture source. Contact the property owner/manager and a qualified restoration or carpet professional for an assessment instead of using a universal drying time or sanitizing recipe.
Prevent recurring moisture and odour
Once the immediate spill is handled, identify and address the source if it was a leak. Do not treat a recurring smell as proof of a specific cause.
