What to Do When You Notice Insects in Stored Food

Note the location, packaging, date and visible signs, and keep a photo if useful. Do not identify an insect from an uncertain image or assume every stored-food issue has the same cause.

Do not transfer food from a package where insects or damage have been observed into another container. Set the package aside from other stored food while you check the manufacturer's instructions and seek suitable food-safety or pest advice. Follow the food maker's directions and local authority guidance for any disposal decision.

Do not apply an insecticide to food, food-contact surfaces or storage areas unless the exact product label expressly permits that use and all label directions can be followed. Never mix pest-control products or transfer them into unlabelled containers.

If the issue continues or its source is unclear, ask a qualified local pest-management provider to identify the concern, explain the proposed treatment and provide the exact product label and precautions. Food safety questions should be directed to an appropriate food-safety authority.
