How to Plan Painting Walls and Ceilings

List the ceiling, walls, trim, doors, built-ins and fixtures in scope, and note existing damage or previous coatings. Photograph the room and identify areas that require a decorator, electrician, carpenter or other trade before painting.

Use the current paint label and substrate-maker directions for preparation, compatibility, ventilation, application and drying. Unknown coatings, moisture, flaking material or suspected hazardous substances need qualified assessment before disturbance.

Have the qualified painter specify preparation, order of work, masking, access, protection, coats, drying intervals, return-to-use and any work requiring another trade. Do not treat a generic online sequence as a substitute for the exact product and room conditions.

Agree who removes coverings, paint residue and construction waste, and which surfaces are safe to clean. A routine cleaner cannot repair paint, strip unknown coatings or certify that a room is ready for occupancy. Confirm any cleaning scope separately.

Confirm surfaces, preparation, product, finish, number of coats if specified by the painter, access, exclusions, price, schedule and change approval in writing. Do not assume a cleaning quote includes painting or decorating.
