How to Protect Upholstery from Sun, Soil and Wear

Identify the cover, backing, dye and cleaning code before vacuuming or spot-treating. Removable covers are not always washable. If the label is missing or the item is valuable, ask the maker or an upholstery specialist for advice.

Direct sunlight can change some dyes and finishes over time. Where practical, adjust curtains or furniture placement and use covers or throws that are compatible with the item. No arrangement prevents all fading or wear.

Blot fresh spills without rubbing, then follow the fabric code and product label. Test only as directed, use minimal moisture and avoid unapproved sprays, solvents, acids or heat. A fabric protector is appropriate only when the furniture maker allows that specific product.

Damp upholstery should be dried only as the maker permits. Persistent moisture, mould-like growth, odour, dye transfer or worn fabric may need a qualified upholstery, building or remediation professional rather than routine cleaning.
