How to Check Waste Disposal Options and Environmental Claims

Write down what the waste is, how much there is, where it came from and whether it may contain chemicals, batteries, electronics, asbestos, clinical material or another controlled substance. Keep unlike materials separate until the relevant authority or qualified provider confirms how they must be handled.

Accepted items, collection arrangements and restrictions can differ between councils and states. Start with your local council and the relevant state or territory environmental regulator. For national policy context, consult the Australian Government’s waste and resource recovery information; use local authorities for instructions that apply to your address and material.

Ask which waste streams the provider accepts, where the material will be taken, what documentation is supplied, and which licences, registrations or transport controls apply locally. Verify claims with the relevant regulator. A general cleaning or property-maintenance service is not automatically a waste transporter, recycler, hazardous-material contractor or disposal facility.

Ask what material, location, time period and measured outcome a claim covers, and request records from the collection or receiving facility. Words such as green, sustainable, recycled or zero waste do not identify the actual destination or prove an environmental benefit. Do not assume that sorting alone guarantees recycling.

If the material is unidentified, potentially contaminated or subject to special controls, do not handle or move it based on a general article.
