Start with the carpet and its care instructions
Check the manufacturer’s guidance, fibre type, backing and any stain-treatment warranty before choosing a product or method. Some fibres and constructions can be damaged by excess moisture, heat, agitation or unsuitable chemicals. When the material is unknown or the stain is persistent, seek advice from a qualified carpet-cleaning provider.
Choose timing around soil and household use
Arrange cleaning when visible soil, a spill, renovation dust or routine upkeep makes it useful and the room can be taken out of service. Consider furniture, household schedules, pets, access and any building or tenancy deadline. Cleaning is not a treatment for pests, leaks, mould or a medical condition.
Allow for the selected method and drying
Ask the provider what method is proposed, how much moisture it uses and what preparation is required. Follow post-cleaning instructions for ventilation, airflow, furniture placement and re-entry. Do not use heaters or fans in a way that conflicts with equipment or product directions, and avoid walking on damp carpet if the provider advises against it.
Maintain carpets between deeper cleans
Vacuum using a setting suitable for the carpet and address spills promptly using the care label’s instructions. Blot rather than scrub when recommended, and avoid adding several spot-treatment products. If carpet is wet from a leak, sewage or another contaminated source, contact an appropriate water-damage specialist instead of treating it as routine cleaning.
